Sunnyside

Sunnyside is a historic neighborhood in Alexandria, located just north of the bustling Del Ray community. The area was originally purchased in 1870 by Charles A. Watson, a member of the prestigious Watson family, who was one of Alexandria’s first African-American landowners. In 1874, the Watson family formally subdivided the land and named it Sunnyside in honor of the men and women who moved there looking for the American dream. The community’s streets – Elbert Avenue, Charles Avenue, and Courtland Circle -- are all named in honor of Watson family members and memorialized in a plaque at the center of the community.
