Shaw Real Estate

Shaw is a historic, urban neighborhood located in the NW quadrant of Washington, DC.  Shaw is often referred to as the Harlem of Washington, DC, for its longstanding reputation as the bastion of black culture and history.  The neighborhood draws its name from Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the Civil War commander of the black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.  The original residents of Shaw were freed slaves who settled in this area on what was then the outskirts of town.

Shaw thrived as the cultural home of black DC.  Howard Theatre was alive with vaudeville and jazz performances from legends including Pearl Bailey, Langston Hughes and native son, Duke Ellington.  The rioting following the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. forever altered the Shaw neighborhood as suburban flight left behind a generation of urban decay.  Read more about Shaw real estate.

The boundaries of the Shaw neighborhood are defined as Florida Avenue to the north, New Jersey Avenue to the east, M Street to the south and 11th Street to the west.  Additionally, the Shaw neighborhood extends westward to 16th Street between S Street and U Street.

Transforming Alleys Into Living Spaces

Photo: Geoff Livingston In many cities alleys are used for things like parking and trash collection, but some of DC’s alleys are now being transformed into living spaces. It’s not exactly a new idea. Generations ago, DC’s alleyways served as home to some of the city’s poorest residents. While the city dealt with a serious shortage of housing in the 1800s, some people needed a place to live close to downtown and couldn’t exactly afford the high prices. That drove them to DC’s alleys. ... Read More

Blagden Alley -- The Place to be in Shaw

Photo: Geoff Livingston Filled with history, rehabbed carriage houses and some pretty cool kid restaurants, Blagden Alley is one of the more interesting surprises you’ll find in the Shaw neighborhood. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, Blagden Alley is the place to check out art or grab a tasty bite to eat, but generations ago it served an entirely different purpose. Following the Civil War, affluent homebuyers relocated to the area, snaping up expensive row houses that b... Read More
