With a mix of housing and other nearby conveniences, family-friendly Penrose is a great option for many searching for a new place to call home in Arlington. Close to the Pentagon, the Penrose neighborhood took off with the arrival of commuter rail service, and the growth of nearby federal agencies and military establishments.

It wasn’t long before Penrose became a popular suburb for those employed in DC. Trolley cars once ran along South Fillmore Street and South Second Street.  In fact, the community took on the name Penrose in the mid 1990s, named after one of the old trolley stops called Penrose Station. The depiction of the old trolley today is even used symbolically on neighborhood signs.

There are now, however, bike lanes and express buses that serve those living in Penrose, plus there are plenty of sidewalks for pedestrians. For those with cars, Penrose is bounded by Columbia Pike, Washington Boulevard, Walter Reed Drive, and Arlington Boulevard.  Read more about Penrose real estate.

More About Penrose Real Estate

Living in Penrose

Today, Penrose remains a convenient place to call home. The Pentagon is just one mile away, and Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall is even closer than that. There are also nearby restaurants, neighborhood taverns, coffee shops, a grocery store and more in the neighborhood.  As well, there are several neighborhood parks, providing sports courts, playgrounds, and more for those of all ages to enjoy.

Penrose Housing

Some of the first homes in Penrose were Queen Anne and Italianate-style designs, followed by mostly wood-frame bungalows.  At the time, mail-order homes were quite popular in Arlington County, and Penrose was no exception. When the Pentagon was built, more housing was needed, which brought about garden-style apartment communities.

Starting in the Mid-Century, more single-family homes and townhomes were added, as were some large apartment complexes. For this reason, you’ll now find a mix of single-family homes, duplexes, condos, and apartments to choose from in Penrose.
