It may not be the most talked about neighborhood in DC, but North Portal Estates is, quite simply, an unknown jewel at the tip of the diamond. As DC’s northernmost neighborhood, this small, yet affluent community is entirely residential.

With around 200 homes to choose from, buyers can opt for a wide variety of home styles. The homes were also built in different time periods. While many homes are different, they do generally start priced in the $700,000s, with some of the larger and most expensive homes in the neighborhood priced slightly above $1 million.
It’s common to find four-bedrooms and three-baths throughout the neighborhood, with homes built on quarter-acre lots. One thing that’s not common is finding a home for sale in the neighborhood. Turnover is extremely low. Homes in North Portal Estates are so coveted they rarely ever come on the market.
You won’t, however, find any major streets in the neighborhood. Instead, North Portal Estates is home to winding streets with single-family homes, large lots and plenty of open space.
North Portal Estates Amenities
Popular with families, North Portal Estates offers easy access to nearby Rock Creek Park, which sits along the northeast boundary of the neighborhood. Because of the park and because only two streets connect up North Portal Estates to some of the surrounding area, the neighborhood feels very suburban.
Homes in the neighborhood are about a 15-minute walk from the nearby Silver Spring Metro station. They’re also within walking distance of bus service on 16th Street NW. For nearby shopping and dining, residents of North Portal Estates have the option of heading to Silver Spring.
