Ivy City is one of Washington, DC's smallest and oldest neighborhoods, located in the NE quadrant of the City. Defined in large part by the growth of the railroad, Ivy City grew in tandem with the expansion of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and officially became a part of the District of Columbia in 1871. Today, Ivy City is home to Ivy City Rail Yard, a railroad coach yard and maintenance facility for Amtrak.

While the largely industrial area suffered along with the railroad's decline for a number of years, in 2012 Ivy City's fortunes began to change for the better. Developers looked more closely at the historic neighborhood because of its close proximity to the bustling Union Market area, a food-lover's paradise with its 40 local vendors and variety of offerings.
In 2013, Douglas Development bought the Hecht Warehouse, later announcing plans for a mixed-use residential and commercial project that spurred additional investment. DC Habitat for Humanity has also taken an interest in the neighborhood, building and restoring approximately 20 homes in the area with another 11 on tap. Mi Casa, a developer known for purchasing and renovating single-family homes for affordable sale to first-time homebuyers, has played a significant role in the community's gentrification with a number of condos and homes constructed to date. The latest project to be announced is "NewCity" -- a 1.5 million SF residential and retail project commissioned by Douglas Development on a 15-acre site bounded by 16th Street, New York Avenue, Montana Avenue and Bladensburg Road.
As the money has flowed in, more specialty shops have opened including a small number of dance clubs and a combined gelato/coffee spot on Penn Street, NE. The nearby H Street Corridor with its array of bars, restaurants and live theatre is another strong draw for prospective residents. The Flats of Ivy City is the first new condo development to deliver in this burgeoning neighborhood.
