Herndon Real Estate
The Town of Herndon is located west of Washington, DC in Fairfax County Virginia. Herndon is bordered by Reston to the east, the Dulles Access Road to the south, Dulles Airport to the west and Fairfax County to the north. Herndon covers 4.2 square miles and its population was 23,932 at the time of the 2010 census.
Herndon draws its name from American naval explorer Commander William Lewis Herndon who captained the SS Central America. Herndon was originally settled after the Civil War by Northern Soldiers who were attracted by the abundance of affordable land. Today, downtown Herndon is a popular tourist attraction that is served by the Washington and Old Dominion Trail.
Major employers in Herndon are dominated by tech companies and government contractors and include Booz Allen Hamilton, Score Association, ITT Exelis and REI Systems. Herndon is served by the Fairfax County Public School District and includes four elementary schools, Clearview Elementary school, Dranesville Elementary School, Herndon Elementary School and Hutchinson Elementary School, Herndon Middle School and Herndon High School.
