Florida Avenue is a street located in the Northwest and Northeast Quadrants of Washington, DC. In the original 1791 L’Enfant plan for Washington,DC Florida Avenue was known as Boundary Street as it was the northern border of the city. As the city rapidly grew after the Civil War beyond the L’Enfant borders, this street was renamed Florida Avenue in 1890.
Florida Avenue runs from the Massachusetts Avenue NW, 22nd Street NW and Q Street NW intersection in the Dupont Circle neighborhood to the H Street NE, 15th St NW, Maryland Ave NE, Benning Road NE and Bladensburg Road NE intersection in the H Street Corridor Neighborhood. Both Howard University and Gallaudet University campuses are located in the path of Florida Avenue.
