More About DC Bungalow-style Homes

DC Bungalow-style Home Designs

A popular style of architecture from the late 1800s through the 1930s, the bungalow stands the test of time, and even stands out today, thanks to its simplistic design points. Bungalows likely gained popularity in the beginning because they were quite different than ornate, Victorian homes.

Instead, bungalows were renowned for their functional design, which often translates to a cozy and inviting interior and exterior. Many bungalows in DC tend to have a brick façade, a small porch, and they typically have windows that frame both side of the front door.

They also oftentimes have traditional shingles and a low-pitched roof. A bungalow is efficient in its layout as well, which oftentimes means open, yet well-defined living spaces.

This type of home is typically a detached, single-family home, but not exclusively. You’ll find they’re often made of brick, but also sometimes of wood or stone. You may sometimes see a bungalow in DC described as a Craftsman cottage.

DC Neighborhoods With Bungalow-style Homes

You may find such typical Craftsman-style elements with a bungalow in the DC area as exposed beams and detailed woodwork. You’ll probably come across several examples of bungalows when you take your home search to suburban areas of DC such as Cleveland Park, Takoma Park, Chevy Chase, and Friendship Heights.

You may also find bungalows along the tree-lined streets of Northwest DC’s American University Park or nestled in the diverse architectural selections of the Palisades neighborhood. Eastland Gardens in Northeast DC is another good place to search.
