When Classrooms Morph into Luxurious Bedrooms

Once a more than century-old school building, the Buchanan School condominiums have since morphed old classrooms into luxurious bedrooms. Originally constructed in the late 1800s, the former Buchanan School was in operation until the early 1990s.

In recent years, it was repurposed and remade into a multi-family, residential property, as the old, three-story school building now contains around 40 condominiums in DC’s Hill East neighborhood. While the exterior of the Roman-revival building was mostly preserved as part of the process, an addition was created between two existing structures on the site.

The south building had most of its interior walls removed and replaced, and steel-framed balconies were added to the brick façade. The north building also had some of its walls removed as part of the renovation project.

The new addition linked the two structures together and was created as a transition of sorts to merge together the different floor elevations between both buildings. The newly formed condos mix the old and the new as modern style points were added to classic building features to create something new.

Buyers can now choose from a one-bedroom, a two-bedroom, or even a three-bedroom residence in Buchanan School. In the end, the conversion project has proven so popular, that half of the condos came under contract in just the first week of sales.

New and prospective residents will find such common features and finishes as exposed brick walls, original, double-height windows, and 14-foot ceilings. You may also find arches that are original to the building, but also modern features that have joined the mix, such as white oak cabinetry in the kitchens, white oak hardwood floors, and custom marble tile flooring in the baths.

In addition, the condos feature stainless-steel appliances, Calacatta quartz countertops, and satin nickel hardware. Around half of the condos come with private patios or balconies. In terms of some of the shared amenities the building, it features a gas grill, a landscaped patio, a lobby with a fireplace and a library, and some private parking for an additional cost.

Buchanan School is part of the larger, Buchanan Park development, which includes a central green, some connecting pedestrian walkways, landscape spaces, and townhomes. You’ll find the condos are within a short distance of Lincoln Park, Barracks Row, and Eastern Market.
