Union Market is Bustling in Northeast DC

Union Market Washington DC

Good energy and good eats can be found at the historic farmers market, Union Market.  Union Market is DC’s year-round indoor market featuring more than 40 local artisans and over 100 businesses.  Near Florida Avenue, NE, Union Market is located at 1309 5th Street, NE.  It’s Metro accessible on the Red Line to the NOMA-Gallaudet U stop.  For those who choose to drive, there’s ample free parking in the lot in front of the market or on the street.

Billing itself as the culinary center of the Nation’s Capital, the Market is open everyday but Monday until 8 PM.  Union Market will remind you of an urban village.  It started 200 years ago as a fresh food Centre Market, and it now expands beyond food to include music, retail, hotel and residences.  Aiming to bring a renewed spirit to this on-trend northeast neighborhood, the market district is home to more than 100 businesses spanning a wide variety of ethnic and socio-economic groups coming together in food production and distribution.  Surrounding the market is a vibrant mix of retail, restaurants, entertainment and more.

As Union Market promises a journey through flavors from around the world, there are also pop-up artisans, such as Buffalo & Burger’s Suburbia---a summer airstream vehicle bar in front of the market, serving up cocktails, wine and beers.  The Teaism tea shop with accessories by local potters and artists, is among the vendors here featuring minimalist design, stalls without tents, and counters for eating fresh oysters and drinking artisanal sodas.  The hall is newly renovated with wide aisles and a lot of natural sunlight streaming in from walls of windows.  Lots of food samples for visitors to taste.  Many come at lunchtime to browse booths and order lunch.  Local food producers sell seasonal produce, fresh eggs, charcuterie, cheeses, meats, bakeries, half-smokes, and prepared foods.  Residents from the neighborhood, visitors and foodies will find “Cajun Meets Asian,” coffee roasters, holiday spirits, Thanksgiving and holiday foods, and assorted vendors.  Rising chefs are frequently honored at galas at Union Market.
