The Wharf Now Open

One of the area’s most anticipated developments has just opened, more than a decade after visionaries first embarked on the journey to bring The Wharf to life. October 12 kicked off four full days of activities, events and fireworks, all to mark the grand opening of phase one of The Wharf.

Dozens of bands and other entertainers came out for the opening, kicked off by fireworks and headlined that evening by The Bacon Brothers, featuring actor and musician Kevin Bacon. Other planned activities include children’s performers, yoga, kayaking and an art exhibition.

The opening weekend celebration concluded on Sunday, October 15 with more celebratory fireworks at sunset. All outdoor activities and performances were free and open to the public.

It’s all to celebrate phase one of The Wharf, which officially first broke ground in 2014, bringing with it several residential buildings and hotels along with two office buildings. Attendees opening weekend experienced an array of new restaurants and several retailers, including boutiques, furniture stores and galleries. As well, the area also features two live music venues.

In addition, more than 860 of the more than 1,300 planned residential units within The Wharf have either already been delivered to new tenants or will soon begin move-ins. The first new condos to deliver in the area were part of 525 Water, which was then followed up by rentals at Incanto.

More rentals will be delivered at The Channel soon, as will the new luxury condos of VIO DC. As well, three new hotels will also deliver soon, including Hyatt House, Canopy by Hilton and an InterContinental Hotel.

Meanwhile, crews should break ground on phase two of The Wharf sometime in mid-2018, with completion of it slated for 2022. Eventual plans for The Wharf include a pedestrian promenade, a paddleboard and kayak launch, ice-skating and the expansion of Main Avenue Fish Market.
