The Greenest Neighborhoods in DC

From its walkability to its eco-friendly initiatives, DC has some of the best options for those in search of a more sustainable lifestyle. If you’re searching for one of DC’s greenest neighborhoods to call home, you won’t have to look far.

Capitol Hill

While Capitol Hill may be known for its historic homes and landmarks, it is also high on the list in terms of green neighborhoods. Capitol Hill has the advantage of green space and gardens including the U.S. Botanic Garden. It also has a number of green buildings and homes, plus some of them sit close to DC’s largest farmer’s market.

Columbia Heights

DC’s first solar powered condos went up in Columbia Heights. This is also where you’ll find the largest residential solar thermal project in DC.

Old Town Alexandria

Old Town Alexandria can claim the honor of being home to the very first LEED-certified condo building in the entire State of Virginia. Old Town is part of the “Eco-City Alexandria” initiative. The idea is to collectively promote green policies, help businesses and preserve natural resources.

In recent years, Old Town was platinum-level certified as part of the Go Green Government Challenge. This was in response to its efforts regarding things like recycling, water waste and energy usage. 

Tysons Corner

In recent years, Tysons Corner has made more and more of an effort to go green itself. A few years ago, the Metro moved in, making it easier for more people to ditch their cars in favor of public transportation or even walking. Tysons Corner has a 30-year-plan to add in more sidewalks, skyways, parks and open space. Leaders also have the goal of going 100-percent carbon neutral by 2030.

Woodley Park

Woodley Park has the advantage of several public transportation options. Surrounded by green space, the neighborhood sits within walking distance of Rock Creek Park and the National Zoo.
