Rediscovering Reston-- the First Planned Community in the US

Offering up space to work, live and play, there’s plenty to discover in Reston. As the nation’s very first planned community, the vibrant Town of Reston was first founded in the mid 1960s.
Since then, it’s grown to become one of the most desirable parts of the DC area. Not only does Reston offer the enjoyment of easy access to parks, the airport and plenty of recreation, but it also offers some slightly more budget-friendly options for buyers who want to live close to DC and all of its offerings.
These days, you’ll find a large variety of different types of housing, from condos, townhomes and apartments in Reston Town Center, to single-family homes set in quiet neighborhoods. The town was also designed to incorporate plenty of parks, trails and open space, too.
You’ll find such family-friendly attractions as a water park and a nearby petting zoo in Reston. In addition, you’ll find a nearby park with a large lake, campgrounds, sports fields and picnic areas. Lake Fairfax Park additionally offers area residents a carousel, and a marina with canoe and pedal boat rentals.
It’s not too far, either, to visit Great Falls Park in nearby McLean. The popular natural landmark offers up hiking trails, rafting, nature exhibits and some sensational views along the Potomac River.
Back in Reston, the town supplies its own museum, with exhibits highlighting the town and showcasing local artwork. The Reston Museum also provides some walking tours and public events. The Walker Nature Center Sanctuary is the place to go for recreation and education, with trails, picnic areas and outdoor displays.
For all of your shopping and dining needs, Reston Town Center is an outdoor shopping mall with a number of restaurants and unique retailers. You’ll additionally find an outdoor skating rink here, and plenty of planned festivals and activities, including summer concerts and seasonal events.
