Preservation, Proximity, Parks Distinguish Aurora Highlands

Sure, it has proximity close to DC, but Aurora Highlands also has parks and preservation. It’s the balance between urban convenience and suburban appeal, however, that certainly makes the community popular today.

Sometimes described as having an “Old Arlington” feel, Aurora Highlands is known for its green space, its neighborhood get-togethers, and its quiet streets. Of course, you’re never too far away from the rest of what you want and need in the DC area, either.

Living in Aurora Highlands means a short commute into DC, or a short walk if you’re headed to Pentagon City or Crystal City. Both of these places have Metro lines. There’s also nearby shopping and dining in Pentagon City.

To this day, houses oftentimes don’t often sit on the market very long in Aurora Highlands, and it’s not just for the convenience. To understand the community, you need to take a look at its start.

It all began more than a century ago, when the electric railway helped usher in new growth and development, including in the area we now called Aurora Highlands. High demand for housing outside of DC brought homebuyers to the area in large numbers between the 1920s and the 1950s.

Aurora Highlands grew from the merger of three original subdivisions: Aurora Hills, Addison Heights, and Virginia Highlands. Today, you’ll find Craftsmen-style homes in Aurora Highlands, as well as Colonials, Tudor Revivals, and even Sears catalog homes.

There are also sometimes Cape Cods that date back to the 1940s, as well as some Mid-Century, ranch-style homes. While most of the single-family homes in the community were built prior to WWII, occasionally, you’ll come across a more modern home for sale, too.

Recently listed homes for sale in the community include a spacious modern home with five-bedrooms and 5.5-baths, as well as a red brick home with four-bedrooms and 4.5-baths. The average sales price for a home in Aurora Highlands is commonly upwards of $1 million.
