Our Favorite DC Co-op Buildings
While a great deal of information is written about DC's sexy and exciting condo and loft buildings, the District's cooperatives do not garner nearly as much ink from the DC real estate community. We thought it would be interesting to provide readers with a glimpse into three of our favorite co-op buildings, each of which offers true urban convenience with the city’s most walkable addresses. These buildings are steeped in history and offer upscale modern city living and the fun and excitement of nearby Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, Adams Morgan, U Street and Georgetown.
The Mendota
DC’s oldest luxury apartment building is The Mendota, a stately building in the prestigious Kalorama neighborhood featured in James Goode’s “Best Addresses.” The Mendota is centrally located one block east of Connecticut Avenue at the intersection of 20th Street, NW and Kalorama Road within walking distance of 2 Metro Stations, including the Woodley Park Metro Station. Built in 1901, The Mendota presented a new upscale housing ownership alternative as a co-op building catering to busy professional Washingtonians compared to owning a DC row house.
Today, The Mendota resident owners praise the 7-story building for its gracious lobby and vintage manually operated elevator, which gives residents a taste of the past. The Chastleton
In the vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood, The Chastleton is one of DC’s most prominent historic buildings featured in Goode’s “Best Addresses” and perched on the corner of 16th Street, NW and R Street. The 8-story building, renovated in 2007, offers 300 condo residences. Amenities consist of a 24-hour staffed front desk, rooftop terrace, fitness center, assigned parking with some units, extra storage, ballroom and interior courtyard. The Chastleton is conveniently located within walking distance of the Dupont Circle and U Street Metro Stations. The ornate Gothic-Revival architectural design features elaborate carved limestone and glazed terra-cotta details. The Watergate
Just say the name, Watergate, and it conjures up historic images as you recall past events, including a certain President. But there’s no denying that the Watergate stands tall today as a prestigious 13-story complex located on Virginia Avenue near New Hampshire Avenue in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. The Watergate is conveniently accessible to the White House, World Bank, K Street, George Washington University and Georgetown. It is also minutes to Northern Virginia destinations like Rosslyn, National Airport, The Pentagon and Old Town Alexandria. The Watergate is ideally located within walking distance of the Foggy Bottom Metro Station, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Washington Harbour, Trader Joe’s, and a local farmer’s market.
