Old Town Recognized as Top Downtown

Notable dignataries including President Obama and the first lady have shared several date nights in Old Town, and now Old Town in Alexandria, VA, is being recognized on a Top 10 list of the best downtowns across the country for 2014. The streets of downtown Old Town has landed a bright spot at #5 on a new list by the website Livability.com. The editors say Old Town Alexandria is one of the best downtowns for its “creativity, inclusion and innovation.” Good downtowns showcase a community by featuring a wide selection of local architecture, art, lifestyles and things to do. “Great downtowns…unite residents…by providing places to connect.” How true of Old Town!
Old Town Alexandria has been selected for its top ranking based on its high energy, cobblestone streets, century-old buildings, Colonial architecture, its appeal to businesses and families, a waterfront setting, sophisticated restaurants and arts. Torpedo Factory Art Center, Birchmere nightclub and Old Town Theater are recognized as special arts venues in the area. Old Town also offers a “modern, hip vibe,” according to the website Livability.com. The median home price is $427,500.

Livability.com is a website focusing on what make small to mid-size cities great places to live, work and visit. The website ranked downtowns based on population growth, ratio of residents to jobs, income growth, home vacancy rates, affordability of housing, and retail and office vacancy rates. The staff then looked at overall livability of the city. Big urban areas like Washington, DC, New York City, San Francisco and Chicago were not included.
