Morton Street Mews: New Columbia Heights Condos

A prime Columbia Heights location between 2 Metro Stations, the vibrant 11th Street retail/entertainment strip and all of the up-and-coming development in the hot spot Park View neighborhood, a new 26-unit condo project will rise and is slated for completion by the end of 2014.  The new Morton Street Mews condos will be re-purposed from a church at 777 Morton Street, NW, along with an adjacent lot.

The 26-unit, 3-story project of 10 townhouse style 2-level condominiums will sit at the corner of Morton Street and Sherman Avenue in the Columbia Heights/Park View neighborhood of DC.  One building will be on Morton Street and another building with 6 brownstones will be along Sherman Avenue, according to developer OPaL LLC.  Formerly the Inglesia Ni Christo Church, the church will be renovated into 10 two-level condos.  Two new construction buildings will face each other and 2 alleyways will be created ---one for pedestrian use and one for cars.  All together, the buildings will be named the Morton Street Mews.

The condos will range from 1 Bedroom+Den to 2 Bedrooms+Den and garage parking will be offered.  The phenomenon of church to residential renovation project has become common in DC, and the Columbia Heights project is the latest one.  Developers plan to retain less than 50% of the existing church structure, but will create an interesting roofline reminiscent of the existing church.  The church was originally built in 1905 for a historically African American Christian denomination, and was designed by prominent architect William Sidney Pittman, the first professional African American architect to maintain his own office.
