LeDroit Park: A Quiet Urban Enclave

One of the DC area’s oldest neighborhoods, LeDroit Park continues to attract new residents, now lured by its reputation as a quiet, urban enclave. This newly revitalized neighborhood has gone through a transition of sorts in recent years, yet still retains much of its historic architecture and charm.

With home designs complimented by dozens of late 1800s-era Victorian designs, many of the homes in this Northwest community are unique. The neighborhood features a number of recently renovated homes, along with some new businesses along its borders. From detached homes to condos and row houses, you’ll find a range of real estate possibilities within the neighborhood of LeDroit Park.

It’s been a long time coming for this historic neighborhood, which began as a racially segregated section of DC, then emerged as home to a number of Howard University professors, politicians, artists and judges. The neighborhood has changed over the decades, however, declining like much of the rest of the general area in the 1980s. However, the appeal of the historic setting in recent years led to new renovations and improvements, making the quiet enclave into a more desirable place for new homebuyers.

To further explore the neighborhood, a self-guided walking tour now leads visitors along the local streets, marking such sites as the childhood home of jazz great Duke Ellington and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s former visit to the neighborhood. There’s also, of course, the historic Howard Theatre, constructed at the turn of the century and now sitting on the National Register of Historic Places.

With nearby Howard University and a nearby Metro station, the neighborhood of LeDroit Park is also just a short walk away from several options in entertainment, found along nearby U Street, as well as a number of restaurants that have recently sprung up in the area.
