You’ve probably heard of them, but have you ever wondered how some of DC’s neighborhoods got their names? From tropical islands to smog, it seems DC neighborhoods all have a story of their own.

Pleasant Plains

Sure, it brings to mind a “pleasant” place to live, and that may be exactly what led to the name Pleasant Plains in the first place. Back in the 1700s it’s said that a farmer bought up a large amount of undeveloped land where the neighborhood now sits. His family named part of their estate Pleasant Plains, which it remains to this day.

Kalorama

Kalorama may sound unusual to some, but that’s because it’s Greek. Kalorama actually means beautiful view in Greek. A poet in the early 1800s coined the name for the house he lived in because

the westmoreland - 2122 california ave nw dc

A premiere setting and admirable views perhaps equally match the elegance of The Westmoreland. On the list of Goode’s Best Addresses, the Kalorama property first opened up as a rental apartment building around the turn-of-the-century, but it took nearly 50 years before the building was eventually converted into a co-op. To this day it remains one of the most impressive and coveted early apartment houses in the area.

As it did in its early years, the Beaux-arts style property still allows for impressive District views from the luxury of the common rooftop deck or the private residences, themselves. Set right along California Street, the building now houses 60 private residential units, rising up six-stories above the surrounding neighborhood.

With a mix of historic properties, Kalorama Triangle continues to thrive, enjoying the reputation as a walkable, quiet urban neighborhood. Bordered by Columbia Road, Calvert Street and Connecticut Avenue, the residential neighborhood of Kalorama Triangle is part of DC’s Northwest Quadrant.

While once known simply as Kalorama, the area was later split off into the more urban Kalorama Triangle and the more residential, Sheridan-Kalorama. A fashionable DC neighborhood already well known for its high-profile residents now has another big name to add to the growing list. New U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson just purchased a multi-million dollar home in Kalorama, the same area that former President Barack Obama and current first daughter Ivanka Trump already call home.

Noted for its sprawling homes and exclusive properties, Kalorama is quickly shaping up to be “The Place to Live in 2017”. Several influential names in the political world are either making plans to move to the community or already call Kalorama home.

While the Republicans and Democrats seem mostly split down party lines on some of the major issues facing our country, it appears two of the most notable families are about to share at least one thing in common; the place they call home. Outgoing President Barack Obama and his family recently signed on to lease a 1920s-style home in Kalorama Heights.

Other upscale residences, including the soon-to-be home of the eldest daughter of President-Elect Donald Trump, surround the $5.3 million mansion.
