It may be the nation’s capital, but DC is far from all business and no play. In fact, DC just snagged a spot on the list of “2018’s Most Fun Cities in America”, as designated by WalletHub.

The personal finance website recently ranked Washington, DC at number 15 when it comes to fun cities across the nation. WalletHub looked at more than 180 cities in the US, and then ranked them based on entertainment offerings in dozens of key metrics.

They included all kinds of entertainment-related categories, from the number of fitness centers to brewery hours and movie theater costs. Researchers looked for cities with plenty of variety when it comes to having “fun”.

For example, cities received higher marks for the number of attractions, plus bar accessibility, good and affordable restaurants, wine and beer prices and hotel prices. Researchers weren’t interested in simply low cost offerings either, as the restaurants had to have at least 4.5-stars and the hotels three stars.

They also looked at fitness club fees, the number of music venues and festivals, dance clubs, casinos, amusements parks, water sports and public beaches, plus performing arts theaters. They then compared the number of such attractions and the costs to a city’s individual population to come up with a score. While affordability did come into play, so did quality and access to many of the entertainment offerings.

DC ranked high in regards to nightlife, plus entertainment and recreation, but the area did receive low marks when it comes to the costs people have to pay for enjoying the added “fun”. WalletHub maintains most Americans spend around $3,000 per year on entertainment alone.

Perhaps not surprising, cities topping the “fun” list include Las Vegas, Orlando and New York City, all major tourist attractions with plenty of offerings. On the other hand, the tropical paradise of Hawaii landed at the very bottom, with Pearl City, Hawaii getting the overall lowest marks of any other city in the study.
