Once considered a summer escape, even today, some of DC’s most expensive real estate is found in Cleveland Park. The designated historic district is certainly still appealing, but generations ago the scenic neighborhood had its very own, regal nickname.
Around the turn-of-the-century, Cleveland Park was dubbed “The Queen of the Washington Suburbs”. A visit to the picturesque neighborhood is all the proof you need, as this neighborhood is not only elegant, but also quite charming.
In <a href="https://www.dccondoboutique.com/cleveland-park/" title="cleveland park real estate">Cleveland Park</a> you’ll find a number of 18th and 19th century estates still standing, including several late Victorians and Queen Anne-style homes. Over the years, the neighborhood added some deco-style apartment buildings, plus some shingle and Mission Revival homes, too.
Essentially, the neighborhood began its growth alongside the streetcar. Still, unlike some other more traditionally laid-out streets and neighborhoods in the DC area, Cleveland Park is known for its curving streets and for the fact that it sits on one of the region’s highest elevations.
Officially named after President Grover Cleveland, it’s said the former president had his own summer White House nearby. He wasn’t the only big-name connection to Cleveland Park. The neighborhood quickly developed into a “power neighborhood” of politicians, journalists, and others.
The neighborhood was so admired over the years, that moviemakers used it to film scenes for a movie that came out in the early 1960s. To add to the majesty of the neighborhood, is its proximity to the National Cathedral.
The stunning cathedral is one of the largest in the world, and an example of Gothic Revival architecture. For nearby shops, restaurants, and cafes, you can always head to Connecticut Avenue. Showcasing decades of growth and development, Cleveland Park’s hidden historic district presents a full range of homes and buildings, some of which can be dated back to the late 1800s and turn of the century. That’s when electric streetcars first began connecting up Cleveland Park to downtown, and neighborhood growth really began to take off.
Spurred by its new status as a streetcar suburb, Cleveland Park grew rapidly. Historians suspect a number of homes in Cleveland Park may have been constructed as summer homes for those working in nearby <a href="https://www.dccondoboutique.com/georgetown/">Georgetown</a>.
Some of the first homes went in along Newark Street, Highland Place and Macomb, not far from the spot where President Grover Cleveland once owned a home. The diverse neighborhood quickly became home to a mix of architectural styles reflective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
As more and more homes went up, the neighborhood began showcasing a mix of styles including Tudor Revivals, Colonial Revivals, Queen Anne style homes, as well as Dutch Colonial Revivals, Craftsman homes and more. In the following years, brick and stone houses joined the neighborhood, and development continued.
It was between 1920 and the early 1940s that most apartments, retail and commercial buildings were constructed, and home building began to taper off. These days, the Cleveland Park Historic District is home to around 1,000 buildings.
For those interested in history, the district today is distinguished by some common features. A large number of frame houses in the Cleveland Park Historic District boast local Rock Creek granite foundations.

It’s taken more than a quarter of a century, but the Klingle Valley Trail is now open, giving people a new option to replace the long ago closed stretch of Klingle Road NW. Not even a mile in length, the old stretch of roadway, running from <a href="https://www.dccondoboutique.com/cleveland-park/">Cleveland Park</a> to <a href="https://www.dccondoboutique.com/mount-pleasant/">Mount Pleasant</a> through Rock Creek Park was prone to drainage and maintenance problems, eventually closed to traffic when a storm washed out a large section of it in the early 1990s.
Political leaders, environmentalists and locals then debated the best way to fix the problem for well more than two decades. While at one time more than an estimated 3,000 vehicles drove Klingle Road, the debate raged for years on how to best serve the public and the environment in the future.
Eventually, crews came up with a final design for the project in 2014 and construction began on replacing the old road with a new asphalt trail in 2015. This involved the realignment of some utility lines, tearing up of the remainder of Klingle Road and forming a new trail that no longer risked being swept away during future storms.
The new $6 million trail project also included installing new infrastructure designed to help keep storm-water runoff in check as well as new landscaping, lighting, benches, fencing and signage. There’s also a new sidewalk in place and the project included restoring Klingle Creek.
Now running alongside the old Klingle Road NW, the trail later connects up with the Rock Creek Park Multi-Use Trail. Leading through a wooded valley, the recreational trail is ideal for biking, jogging, walking or skating. One of the NBA’s free agent stars is making his biggest local move off the courts, putting down roots in Cleveland Park. Ian Mahinmi, of the Washington Wizards, just paid $2.65 million for a recently renovated home in the neighborhood. The residence sold for $855,000 two years ago. This news could bode well for the city, as the former center from the Indiana Pacers appears to be interested in living in the DC area for a while. His contract is worth $64 million, and provides a four-year deal with the team.
Located in northwest Washington, Cleveland Park is well known for its late 19th century constructed homes, some of which are featured annually as part of the Cleveland Park Historical Society’s neighborhood house tour. The homes come in a variety of different styles popular during that period, most notably Georgian Revival, Mission Revival and Queen Anne style architecture. Quicker than a blink of an eye, New York Times columnist David Brooks sold his Cleveland Park home for $4.5 million in less than 48 hours in September. The century-old 6 bedroom, 4.5 bathroom Colonial home off Wisconsin Avenue in fashionable yuppie <a href="https://www.dccondoboutique.com/cleveland-park/">Cleveland Park</a> presumably went fast since not much is on the market now of that size.
Journalist and author Brooks and his wife Sarah purchased the home less than 2 years ago for $3.95 million. Real estate in the coveted Northwest neighborhood holds its value and often shows increases in a short time. The Brooks couple is reportedly divorcing after 27 years of marriage. Cleveland Park is home to a prominent number of DC’s media and government elite. Brooks can count columnist Al Hunt and PBS anchor Judy Woodruff as his neighbors as well as PBS executive editor Jim Lehrer.
Brooks is a New York Times columnist, PBS News Hour regular and political commentator.
