Brookland: Popular Northeast Neighborhood
A virtual small town set in the midst of a much larger city, Brookland provides its residents with a popular location to call home. This Northeast DC neighborhood is well known for its quiet streets, as well as its access to historic landmarks.
Residents often boast about the friendly feel of the neighborhood, where neighborhood pride runs strong and is passed from generation to generation. That’s not to say development hasn’t happened. In fact, a number of developers have eyed the Brookland neighborhood in recent years. You won’t, however, find many big retail chain stores located throughout the community of Brookland.
Instead, you’ll find a variety of locally-owned and operated businesses, further adding to the charm and appeal of the community. Brookland’s entire business area, even today, fits within just a few blocks.
The majority of Brookland is dedicated to residences. With that in mind, you’ll find a wide variety of single-family homes for sale throughout Brookland, including Victorian, Colonial, Tudor and Queen Anne designs.
There’s also the option of choosing from one of the apartments of Monroe Street Market, putting area residents just steps from the local farmers’ market, dining options and dozens of art studios. This provides some variety for future residents, as Brookland is home to not just families these days but also to many young professionals.
Home to Trinity College and Catholic University too, Brookland shares the National Arboretum with neighboring Eckington. You’ll also find a number of historic buildings and monuments in the area, including President Lincoln’s Cottage and Fort Bunker Hill Park, dating back to the Civil War.
The old Brooks Mansion sits on the National Register of Historic Places, and still stands in the neighborhood. Other options for area residents include visiting the green space of Noyes Park or the large Turkey Thicket Recreation Center.
