Home builders, architects and developers are taking pet-friendly luxury design to a new level as they try to please a growing number of residents and future buyers who scout new condos and single-family homes with their dogs and cats in mind.
With their family pets’ comforts a priority and logistical challenges like doggie-doors, yard space and pet washing stations, many future buyers are considering where to live based in part on ease and conveniences for their four-legged family members. Some are looking at special pet built-ins and cabinetry in rooms that their pet may live in to make sure it blends in with the home as well as doggy-eating and dressing stations.
Pet ownership is at an all-time high, in part as a result of Americans delaying marriage and having children later in life. In the U.S., 68% of households had at least one pet in 2012, according to the American Pet Products Association, an increase from 62% in 2010. Spending on all pet-related products and services is at an all-time high as well---over $53 billion in 2012, up from $41 billion five years before.
