Alexandria Named Top Travel Destination for 2018
The secret is definitely out when it comes to Alexandria. Not only is the area a great place to live, but it’s sure to soon attract even more visitors, as well. That’s because Money Magazine just named Alexandria as a top travel destination for 2018.
The magazine looked at destinations around the US and the globe that are not only great places to go, but also supply the best value for your money. In all, they came up with 20 top destinations, ten national and ten international, based on information from Lonely Planet, placing Alexandria in the number one spot for the US.
In delivering the honor, Alexandria received high marks for its location and setting. Only about 10 miles from DC landmarks, Alexandria is also home to a historic waterfront, red brick homes and cobblestone streets.
It’s pointed out that it’s about half the cost to stay in an Alexandria hotel when compared to a downtown hotel, making the location a real bargain. In addition, research suggests the average airfare to reach Alexandria is about $300, while a week for two to visit the area costs around $2,500.
The magazine also points to local eateries, galleries and boutique stores, along with the renowned Birchmere Music Hall, attracting artists like Johnny Cash and Dave Matthews. In addition, research points to the nearby Mount Vernon estate, a popular tourist destination, while area vineyards are only about an hour away.
The magazine suggests that the top 20 destinations on the list for 2018 aren’t necessarily the least expensive places or the most expensive, but rather locations where value, cost and quality come together to deliver sensational results. Alexandria beat out other popular US travel spots including Chicago, California’s Anaheim, home to Disneyland, Lake George in New York and Philadelphia. Internationally, Tokyo took the top spot, followed by Rome.
