Alexandria Named to Best Small Cities List 2021

Locals already know what makes living in Alexandria so special, but now the world is getting a better look at some of its highlights. Alexandria was once again just named one of the best small cities.

The honor comes from the 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards survey by Conde Nast Traveler. The survey took in responses from more than 800,000 travelers, then used the results to help tally what it calls the 10 “Best Small Cities”.

Alexandria snagged the number three spot on the list for 2021. The website refers to Alexandria as a charming, historic city that’s located just across the Potomac River from DC.

It credits the red brick sidewalks of Old Town and the immaculately preserved row houses that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. In particular, Conde Nast recommends travelers head to King Street for its specialty shops, boutiques and restaurants.

It also recommends heading to the waterfront to take in some views and take a tour of the studios and galleries of Torpedo Factory Art Center. Finally, at the end of the day, its recommended people head out to experience the old-time Colonial vibe of Gadsby’s Tavern.

This is the fourth straight year that Alexandria’s been ranked one of the top 5 “Best Small Cities”. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Alexandria is just minutes away from DC, which makes the top 10 list of the nation’s “Best Large Cities”.

Aspen, Colorado ranked first in the survey for small cities, while Charleston, South Carolina ranked second. Alexandria came out ahead of Santa Fe, Greenville, Carmel-by-the-Sea and Key West. Savannah, Jackson Hole and Newport rounded out the rest of the top 10.

The Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards recognizes the best of the travel industry. Readers from around the world are asked to rate their travel experiences, which are then compiled to come up with the overall ranking.
