crystal gateway - arlington va

A true icon of the neighborhood, the Crystal Gateway condos rise up high above Crystal City. This established high-rise stands 18-stories high, with a distinguished, curving façade that easily makes it stand out in the neighborhood.

Originally built in the early 1980s, there are now more than 170 condos for buyers to choose from in the building. Potential buyers are treated to a range of different floor plans, even including a two-story penthouse with floor-to-ceiling windows and spectacular views of the DC area.

You’ve may have heard about old warehouses being converted to condos, and perhaps even old churches, but one of the newest trends in DC involves going from firehouses to condos. While plenty of fire stations are still in operation across the region, there are other, older stations, that are no longer active, yet have a new purpose.

Properties like Old Firehouse No 9 in the U Street Corridor have since been converted into condos. The property was originally built in the late 1800s but turned into a 13-unit condo building in the 1980s.

Yet another old firehouse, this one on Maryland Avenue NE, has also since been converted into residences. Originally built in the late 1800s as well, the landmark building now houses loft-like condominium homes.

A converted schoolhouse makes the perfect setting for distinctive lofts with a rich history in Capitol Hill. The Lovejoy Lofts is just one of a handful of old schools that have since been restored and repurposed into condominium homes in the DC area.

This turn-of-the-century schoolhouse was first reimagined into condos in the mid 2000s, and now houses more than 50 private residences. During the renovation project, crews were able to successfully retain some of the building’s original features, such as high ceilings, oversized windows, brick accent walls and arched doorways.

A former horse stable may just provide one of the coolest spots for loft-style condo living in the DC area. Located in Logan Circle, some of what’s now referred to as Fennessy Lofts takes up the old WH Penland & Company horse stable.

The horse stable business dates back to the late 1800s, although the building also once served as home to a cab company. It wasn’t until the 2000s that the property found new life as a condo project.

The entire development is a combination of a new, contemporary condo building, and an old livery stable found in the alleyway right behind it. Reimagined as dozens of condos, some of the Fennessy Lofts consists of units inside the old red brick stable.

It may be small in size, but the Kingman Park neighborhood is packed with history. As one of DC’s newer historic districts, Kingman Park just received the official designation a couple of years ago.

It took years of debate before that happened. First settled in the 1920s as a primarily middle class, African American neighborhood, the majority of homes and buildings in Kingman Park were built up from the 1920s through the 1940s.

Kingman Park if filled with brick rowhomes today, a majority of which are in the Federal style. While housing prices have increased in recent years, keeping in line with development of the new streetcar line, the neighborhood has still remained somewhat more affordable than other nearby neighborhoods.

Like taking a walk in the park, the tranquil neighborhood of Hawthorne offers an idyllic setting with mature trees and plenty of surrounding green space. Reportedly named for a type of tree that once grew all over the neighborhood, the majority of Hawthorne today is entirely residential.
