Don’t let its zip code fool you, Spring Valley is decidedly suburban. This DC neighborhood may be slightly less well known than others in the area, but its residential options are certainly impressive.

The winding, hilly streets of Spring Valley are filled with beautiful homes. It’s rare to find properties priced under $1 million in this neighborhood of large homes and towering oak trees.

Generally, a majority of the homes tend to be brick Colonials, although you will find some Tudors and other designs in the area. The homes in the southern part of the neighborhood, farthest from Massachusetts Avenue, tend to be even larger, with some of the most impressive designs close to Rockwood Parkway.

The Trust for Public Land comes out with a ranking of urban parks and recreational space each year in the nation’s 100 largest cities. This year, the ranking put DC at the very top of the list for its ParkScore.

The ranking looked at how close people live to public parks, the size of those parks, the amount of land a city devotes to its parks and the amount of money a city spends on its parks. The study also considered park amenities, such as playgrounds, rec centers, splashpads, public restrooms, basketball hoops and dog parks.

Popular Reston Town Center is in line for a multi-million-dollar makeover. Crews plan to spend up to $5 million making upgrades to common areas of its public plaza.

This includes installing artificial turf where the ice-skating rink sets up in the winter months. While the actual redesign of the public plaza is still being worked out, the overall project focuses on making public space within the now 30-year old site more inviting and contemporary.

While the town center already boasts a number of events throughout the year including an annual arts festival and summer weekend concerts, more events and programming will likely be added in to draw more people out to the space. Crews may also be adding in an outdoor beer or wine garden.

The annual ACSM American Fitness Index takes into account the 100 largest cities in the U.S., ranking them in terms of dozens of different health-related indicators. Those categories range from health behaviors to community infrastructure.

Arlington took the very top spot for 2019 with an overall score of 87.3. In fact, Arlington ranked as one of the top 10 cities for 22 of the 33 indicators studied to come up with the ranking.
