Project goals include not only improving access to the canal for everyone, but also repairing some of the infrastructure. Designers also hope to preserve and highlight the canal’s historical significance while at the same time giving people a place to take a leisurely stroll.

Once the site of a parking lot, the very first park is now open for visitors to The Wharf. Waterfront Park offers three and a half acres of green space, including a canopy, water feature and grassy areas for lounging and enjoying the future surroundings.

Designed by Landscape Architecture Bureau to link the Southwest neighborhood to the new mixed-use development, the park is the first of three parks planned for the area, in addition to four public piers. It took three years of planning, including community meetings and input to come up with the design, incorporating bocce courts, a play area for kids, winding paths and rows upon rows of sheltering willow trees.

Upon closer examination, though, it becomes evident that tech workers and entrepreneurs are being lured to DC by the area’s governmental and life sciences dominance, as workers seek out close proximity to some of the nation’s most prominent policymakers.

The global real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield came up with the ranking, analyzing cities

Planners in Bethesda are thinking big, with grand plans to remake the downtown area with enhanced commercial, retail and residential space. When the Metro Red Line extended to Bethesda in the mid 1980s, the city really began to take shape, bringing a number of high-rise buildings to the area. These were later joined by new restaurants, movie theaters and hotels, with a pedestrian-friendly vibe.

Now, years later, county planners have their eye on the future again, this time with a
