Forbes magazine gives a shout out to DC as “America’s Coolest City” on its 2014 list.  DC offers plenty to do and a good size young, hip population.  DC beat out Seattle, Austin, San Francisco, New York and other cities.  Young people are flocking to this area excited by high salaries and a terrific quality of life and social activities.

DC’s best features, as characterized by Forbes, include lots of cultural and entertainment options, plenty of recreational activities, bars and restaurants, breweries, farmers markets per capita, ethnically diverse demographics, and a significant part of the population that falls in the 20-34 year age group.  Forbes also points to DC’s constant influx of population that has grown almost 5% since 2010.

While the economic recovery across America continues and many jobs lost are being replaced with lower-paying ones, DC is in a unique position: 44.1% of households have incomes greater than $100,000 while only 11.5% of households earn less than $25,000.  These numbers are staggering in light of a disproportionate share of low wage jobs taking hold in many parts of the country.  California tech hubs in San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara boast the highest income levels in the country; DC ranks #2 in highest household income.

A study by the U.S. Conference of Mayors released figures this month showing income gains further skewed toward the wealthy, while parts of the US. have the most income inequality.  The study suggests from 2005-2012 median household income

DC offers the best opportunities to start a business or climb the corporate ladder.  A new Bizwomen study ran data to show which city across the country is best for women in business.  DC’s market is  #1 in the U.S.  The Bizwomen study looked at the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the country, and DC emerged as the clear winner in all categories.  DC is a female-friendly town.  Women own more than a third of the businesses in DC, which is the highest rate in the entire country.

The top highest scores in the study went to cities with a significant number of well educated, well-paid women who hold positions of power and influence in the business community.  DC has the most educated women in the country: 46% of women in DC have Bachelor’s degrees; 21%
