Hawthorne: A Quiet Neighborhood in Northwest DC

The close-in tranquil neighborhood of Hawthorne in Northwest DC offers residents a natural setting as well as the convenience of proximity to downtown DC, Rock Creek Park and sought-after public schools.  Amidst mature trees and greenery, Hawthorne is an entirely residential neighborhood of approximately 250 single-family homes off Western Avenue in the Chevy Chase section of DC.  Hawthorne borders Montgomery County, Maryland on one edge and the other two sides are bounded by Rock Creek Park.

While the homes in Hawthorne were primarily built in the 1950s with a mix of Colonial-styles, ramblers and split levels on large lots, most of the interiors of the homes have been enlarged and renovated while the exteriors are the original design of the neighborhood.  Many houses have wooded views, and easy access to paved trails for jogging, biking and walking dogs.  Candy Cane Park is in the neighborhood for children; Meadowbrook Stables for horseback riding.

The neighborhood is named for the Washington hawthorn tree, displaying showy white flowers in the spring and bright red fruit in the fall.  Hawthorne is also part of Chevy Chase Citizens Association, which has an active email listserv discussion, and promotes lots of social interaction among the neighbors, including annual holiday and Spring Fling community parties.  Membership is available for the Rock Creek Pool swim club in the neighborhood.

The serene neighborhood of Hawthorne offers quiet streets and quick access to downtown DC through the Rock Creek Park.  Currently, there are four houses on the market in Hawthorne.  The homes range in price from $699,000-$1.598 million.  Here is a resource to learn more about the community and view active Hawthorne real estate listings.
