Bellevue

If you’re looking for a bike-friendly community in DC, you’ll want to take a second look at Bellevue. Close to Downtown DC and the National Harbor, it’s easy to get around this popular community.  Located in far southern DC, Bellevue is almost entirely residential. This centrally located neighborhood takes its name from the old Bellevue mansion that once stood in the area.  Torn down for use by the military during the Civil War, some of the land was eventually divided up into lots and sold off. A majority of residential development in the neighborhood occurred in the 1940s, aimed at military personnel tied to Bolling Air Force Base.

More About Bellevue

These days, many of the homes of Bellevue are single-family homes and duplexes made of red brick. In more recent years, new development has come to  Bellevue as well, bringing in new condos, reimagined townhomes, apartments and a new healthcare clinic.

There is also a new library. The location of Bellevue is conveniently close to several major sites and employers in the DC area, some of which are within biking distance of the homes. Years ago, a large parcel of land in the area was turned into the US Naval Research Laboratory, which still stands today.

The community is also a short distance from the green space of Oxon Run Park and Trail. There are additionally some paved trails at Anacostia Park.  The park provides room for sports, roller skating, boating and even some aquatic gardens. In addition, Navy Yard is where you’ll find a waterfront park running alongside the Anacostia River.

When it comes to a convenient location, that’s close to what you need and want in the DC area, Bellevue is definitely worth consideration. This bicycle friendly community is a quieter section of DC, but for many that’s, no doubt, a big part of its appeal.
