Hollin Hills: Alexandria’s Mid-Century Modern Neighborhood

The award-winning mid-Century modern enclave of Hollin Hills in Alexandria, Virginia is a stunning example of modern architecture and landscape.  The neighborhood is close to DC offering mature shaded trees, large yards and privacy away from the urban bustle.  Hollin Hills is located about 10 miles from the nation’s Capital and biking distance to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and near walking trails, parklands and 2 miles south of Alexandria and the Capital Beltway between Fort Hunt Road and U.S. Route 1.

The neighborhood of 450 homes was built by Robert C. Davenport in the 1940s and designed by DC architect Charles M. Goodman.  The award-winning enclave is part of the Historic District on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  It was the first time contemporary construction was brought to northern Virginia.  One of the first post-World War II housing developments around DC, it is known for its modern architecture whose architect hoped to build attractive and affordable homes for America’s middle class.  Hollin Hills was named after Hollin Hall Plantation, originally owned by George Mason, one of the Founding Fathers, known as the “Father of The Bill of Rights.”

Hollin Hills residents enjoy a close-knit neighborhood.  Hollin Hills is extremely hilly with dramatic lots on which were built homes featuring modern architecture with lots of glass to fit the site.  The homes feature walls of glass.  Each home is designed with good-sized lots no smaller than one-third of an acre.  In the neighborhood, the Civic Association is active and boasts annual house and garden tours.
